All You Need to Know About CNG Conversion

CNG conversion is converting an existing gasoline or diesel powered engine to the ones that operate on both gasoline and compressed natural gas (CNG)

This serves as an alternative to high cost of gasoline in that it is more cost effective and environmental friendly.

Benefits of CNG Conversion

  1. Environmental friendliness: CNG produces fewer harmful emissions including less carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides etc
  2. Fuel Efficiency: CNG vehicles have better fuel economy than gasoline or diesel vehicles
  3. Cost saving: CNG is generally less expensive leading to potential saving of fuel costs

More Facts About CNG Conversion

>  Initial cost: initial cost of conversion can be very high compared to a simple tune-up. The cost ranges between three hundred thousand naira and six hundred thousand naira. However, the long term savings can offset whatever high cost that incurred.

>  Tank size: CNG vehicles may have smaller tanks compared to gasoline and diesel vehicles leading to more frequent fueling.

>  Fueling Stations: The availability  of CNG fueling stations is limited in some areas

>  Vehicle compatibility: Not all vehicles are suitable for CNG conversion.

> Trunk Room Reduction: the installation of the CNG tank which is in the trunk of the car, reduces the original space of the trunk. ( see title image)

Conversion Process

Compatibility verification: investigate your vehicle’s compatibility with CNG convversion before embarking on it. This I necessary owing to the fact that not all vehicles are compatible. Vehicles manufactured before 1996 may not be compatible. Factors like engine size, compression ratio and fuel injection play a role. Ensure that the changes agree with local laws and policies for safety and environmental concerns.

Component Installation: The conversion kit includes components such as CNG tanks, fuel lines (different from the existing) regulators and injectors. These components must be installed in your vehicle.

Remapping of ECU: The Vehicle’s Engine Control Unit (ECU) which was mapped to function with gasoline or diesel may need to be remapped to optimize performance and fuel efficiency with CNG

Testing And Certification: After installation, the vehicle needs to undergo testing to ensure proper operation and safety. It may also require certification from local Authorities.
